We’ve started a monthly family art challenge and even Scott joined in this time. Today we looked at a picture of a giant and all had a go at drawing our own version. Here are the results. It is very interesting to see the development according to age.

farm animals

We’ve been doing some farm drawing. Chloe who has drawn the first one was so free with her picture that even Humpty Dumpty and some fish were included. (I was admiring the pattern she put on the owl when she answered “Mum that’s a chicken”.) Jessie has drawn the second picture and has very cleverly included a duck looking at it’s own reflection – amazing. In the middle of her picture is a Bratz horse, she had seen one of those before. I really like the way young children can so easily tell a story with their art. I need to take some lessons from them to make up some little scenes with my farm characters. While on the subject of animals and being free with your style check out the beautiful work of Amy Schimler.

It is interesting to see how some pictures have a mind of their own. I started with this simple black and white line drawing and thought I would add some colour. The next thing I knew I had played around with colour, layers and textures to produce this.

At the end of June I am enrolled in a short illustration course – Intro to Illustration : Words and Pictures. I am really looking forward to this as it will be good to meet with some other people interested in illustrating and to get some inspiration and learn new things.

It is always difficult for me to decide if I like backgrounds or not, so today I have included both?

Polars at the zoo

Bears are always my favorite subject to draw so when I drew these polar bears I had to think of a picture to put them in. Just for a change these bears are at the Zoo.

It has come to my attention that my pictures are often flat so in this illustration I have tried to add depth by placing my bears in the middle of the picture. I really like using the colours from the harmonies swatches, they are a little brighter than those from the CMYK .
